Following his completion of a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Georgia, Dr. Protos obtained a Master’s degree in Human Anatomy and Biology at Loyola University in Chicago. It was during this time he discovered his true passion was medicine, and he enrolled at the Chicago Medical School where he received his medical degree. Dr. Protos completed his General Surgery residency at Michigan State University and became fascinated by cardiovascular disease and the ability to make substantial improvements in the lives of his patients. This led him to complete his Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at the University of Louisville. He is board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Protos’ areas of professional interest include valvular and ischemic heart disease as well as the treatment of atrial fibrillation, and he is especially excited about incorporating new and minimally invasive technologies into his practice. He has written numerous scholarly articles, many of which have been published in peer reviewed journals and was the recipient of the American College of Surgeons Leadership Scholarship. Most recently, Dr. Protos was chosen from a broad field of his peers to be named the inaugural Denton Cooley Fellow for 2018. Additionally, he was also selected for the James L. Cox Fellowship for the advanced study of the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Both of these prestigious awards are chosen by the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, one of the premier organizations for the specialty of thoracic surgery. Dr. Protos is particularly enthusiastic about these awards because of the opportunity they represent to integrate the latest strategies into his practice to positively impact the lives of his patients.
